Founded in 1990 by Roberto Borraccino, Tema Sistemi took its first steps in the world of firefighting installations, focusing from the beginning on active protection. Thanks to the founder's 20 years of experience in the Oil&Gas sector, the company quickly entered the market dealing with the installation and maintenance of fire-fighting systems inside refineries and large industrial complexes at risk of major accidents.
Experience in the industry and new environmental regulations banning the use of halon gases, which were widely used at the time, pushed founder Roberto Borraccino toward a new insight: to seek more sustainable alternatives.
Thus was born Zelig Hi Tech, which develops FIREFIVE, a biodegradable and nontoxic extinguishing agent. Tema Sistemi becomes its promoter, integrating it into its plants and confirming its commitment to responsible innovation.
Over time, the company takes these innovations to other contexts, also participating in international projects and increasingly establishing itself as an industry leader, synonymous with quality, reliability and sustainable vision.
As Tema Sistemi's experience in the firefighting sector grows, so does its know-how. Increasingly specific and customized requests from customers are prompting the company to take a decisive step: to develop its systems in-house, so as to ensure totally customized solutions.
In 1998, a highly specialized in-house engineering structure was established, with departments dedicated to marine, hydraulic and electrical engineering. It is the beginning of a new phase: Tema Sistemi starts direct production of its equipment, including components, ensuring full control over quality, performance and adaptability.
The company begins to produce foam, inert gas and water systems, and at the same time starts experimenting with an emerging technology: water mist systems. This innovation, the result of in-house research and development, will over time become the flagship of Tema Sistemi, which still today is the only Italian company producing these systems.
After the first few years of production, once again Roberto Borraccino intercepted a crucial market need: there can be no real safety in high-risk places without adequate training. It was from this awareness that, in 2000, he founded Tema Safety & Training, a company specializing in fire safety training and technical consulting. Precisely on these fronts, T.S.T. becomes a strategic partner for Tema Sistemi, supporting it in training and analysis of operational contexts and contributing to the complete and integrated safety of environments.
From a small local business Tema Sistemi transformed into an international company, becoming a joint stock company in 2003. During these years, its clients grow in number and prestige, and are distributed all over the world.
In the Oil & Gas and industrial sector, the company boasts collaborations with leading realities such as Total, Petroven, Agip, Isab, Italiana Petroli, Eni SpA, , Snam, Agiba (Egypt), Naoc (Nigeria), SAIPEM (Congo), Gazpromneft (Russia) IREN, Stogit, Marcegaglia, Ansaldo, Ilva, Polimeri Europa.
It is also beginning to consolidate its presence in the military field, working with the Air Force, Piaggio Aerospace, NATO and the Italian Navy.
It was from this latest collaboration that the boom in the naval sector was born: Tema Sistemi kicked off the first major FREMM ship protection project for Fincantieri, which would mark the beginning of a long series.
To date, the company has protected as many as 68 military ships, not only of the Italian Navy but also of the Turkish, French, Algerian, Indian and Russian navies as well as several passenger ships and luxury yachts.
The boom is not limited to the maritime sector. The civilian sector also experienced significant expansion: Tema Sistemi built systems for INPS, Auchan, Agenzia delle Entrate, the Universities of Lecce and Bari, as well as numerous installations in archives and executive offices.
A milestone in the company's history is represented by the first installation of a water mist system in 2007 at the Palazzo della Regione in Trieste: a system that is still fully functional, as certified by the last maintenance performed in January 2025.
At this time Tema Sistemi entered a phase of full expansion. Production grows, but the goal is even more ambitious: to certify its systems to the highest international standards. Thus begins an intensive testing program in the presence of the most authoritative bodies, which leads to obtaining numerous certifications: UL, FM, RINA, MED, PED, NFPA, BV, VdS, BS, BOSEC, CEI-IEC, ATEX, IMO.
Meanwhile, the company also consolidates in the Russian market, protecting ROSNEFT, GAZPROM, LUKOIL refineries and obtaining all GOST certifications necessary to operate in the country.
A special focus is on water mist systems, which require full-scale testing. Tema Sistemi builds an adjustable roof test area in its facilities, where it faithfully recreates the environments to be protected. Here it certifies its systems for a wide variety of applications: industrial (cable tunnels, transformers, turbines etc.), naval (accommodation, machinery spaces, kitchens etc.) and civil (hotels, theaters, museums, hospitals, offices, stores etc.).
Growth also leads to territorial expansion: in addition to the Ravenna and Taranto offices, in 2018 Tema Sistemi is opening new offices in Turin, Milan and Rome to be closer to its clients.
From 2018 to the present, Tema Sistemi continues its growth path with determination, always focusing on research and innovation. Business is consolidated both in Italy and abroad, and the company looks ahead, setting new and ambitious goals.
In 2020, a research project started in 2012 with Tor Vergata University in Rome, initially focused on fire protection of paintings, resumes life. The project evolves and broadens its scope, embracing the entire cultural heritage, a priceless treasure to be safeguarded.
In collaboration with the University of Ferrara, La Sapienza in Rome, the National Fire Department and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, SAFENG is taking shape: the first scientific-industrial project dedicated to the development of a fire-fighting system tailored for cultural heritage. A system capable not only of effectively extinguishing fires, but also - and above all - of doing so without compromising the integrity of the work or causing damage to people or the environment.
From this vision comes Nargomist70, the first water mist system designed specifically for the protection of works of art and historic environments. An innovation that marks a turning point for the company, opening a new chapter in the responsible protection of our cultural heritage.
At the same time, Tema Sistemi never abandons high-risk sectors. In fact, at the beginning of 2025, it obtained the prestigious FM certification for the protection of turbines and machinery spaces up to 260 m³, confirming its leadership in even the most complex contexts.
Today the company is looking to the future with the same pioneering spirit as always. It already has new research projects dedicated to the civil sector in the pipeline, with one big goal: to continuously improve its fire protection systems and help make the world a safer place for everyone.
Did you know that the name Tema Sistemi comes from Electronic and Mechanical Alarm Technologies? Precisely because the business initially focused on these aspects.

Then as times went on, we decided to modernize and focus on colors and shapes that evoked fire in a more direct way.
But the dog has remained our most loyal friend!

In 2020, we decided to include an even stronger reminder of our core business in our logo: a drop of water enclosing a flame to express our desire to focus on natural and environmentally friendly extinguishing systems such as our innovative Aquatech® water mist systems.
For our 30th and 35th anniversaries, we decided to give voice to our long history of experience and looking to the future.
